Hello to all FSSM members and friends,

Pringle Creek Community is now accepting applicants for the Urban Farmer Certification Class for 2012. This is a great opportunity for anyone curious about learning to garden in the urban setting.

Urban Farmer Certification 2012

Urban Farmer Certification is an opportunity to learn how to grow your own food in an urban setting. Classes are taught by real farmers and OSU Master Gardeners, and include both classroom discussion and experiential learning in the field. Students are expected to demonstrate skills in their own garden setting in order to obtain certification.

Schedule: Ten classes (once per month) between January and October 2012, on the 2nd Saturday of each month. 10am –Noon.

Cost: $60 per person, 20% discount for FSSM members and couples. Scholarships available.

Space limited to 25 students. To apply, please send an email with a brief narrative on “Why I want to participate in this program” to Urban Farmer Nicole McDavid at nicole@pringlecreek.com. Call 503-315-1055 for more details.

Sustainable Salem, formerly known as the Friends of Salem Saturday Market, is currently seeking dedicated, passionate board members.

Background:

Sustainable Salem is a tax exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Our mission is to encourage community support of local, sustainable agriculture, educate the public about healthy, locally produced food and goods, and enhances the creative, social and community aspects of the Salem Saturday Market.
We are currently in a transitional phase with multiple board member positions open. The remaining members are open to new ideas, new energy and changing the focus of our programming.
This is an exciting opportunity to help guide the direction of a Salem-based nonprofit!

Local Farm Tours
Sustainable Agriculture and Food Resource Guides
Speaker Series and Workshops
Large events, such as a Sustainability Fair

Marion Polk Food Share Tour This Saturday

Attention Friends of Salem Saturday Market members!

We have one more farm tour for this coming Saturday, November 5th at 10am.

Join us at Marion Polk Food Share this Saturday at 10am for a inside look of this organization that is leading the fight to end hunger in Marion and Polk counties. We will take a guided tour of the Marion Polk Food Share warehouse, edible landscaping and greenhouse. Then we will carpool down the street and tour the Oregon School for the Deaf’s community garden.

We hope to see you there!

Spooktacular Saturday a Success!

People and pets were at the market in full force this last Saturday. Some people came dressed in their Halloween costumes, while others included their pets in the festivities.

Along with the pre-Halloween activities, it was also the day of the annual market garage sale. Thanks to donations to the garage sale, we raised $54 that will help support activities for the market next season.

The second book exchange of the 2011 Market took place on Saturday, September 24. Several people at the market expressed their gratitude for us having the book exchange.

A thank you to Jennifer Mendez who helped to set up the books on Saturday.

Be sure and join us on October 8th for our last Chef at the Market of this season! The featured chef will be David Rosales of downtown Salem restaurant La Capitale.

Marc Nassar Featured Chef @ Market on Saturday, September 10

We are excited to have Marc Nassar as our featured Chef @ the Market this Saturday, September 10 at 11:00 a.m. He’ll be preparing some delectable, free-form zucchini pancakes, using fresh local ingredients.

Always sensitive to food and flavours, Marc says he was never avid about cooking, it was more a required activity of living. However, one day a space opened up in the Reed Opera House and, freshly unemployed after his business partner in a greeting card endeavor wanted to close that business, Marc decided to open a lunch place and call it the Soup Cellar. In a limited space and with little equipment, Marc set off to learn how to cook from scratch, and in two long years the Soup Cellar was known for its fresh soups, wraps, hummus, salad and juice bars, and interesting fresh vegetarian entrees. And, as they say, the rest was history: For two years running the Soup Cellar was voted Salem’s best Vegetarian Restaurant, and one year this tiny, M-F lunch only, 24-seat hidden in the basement joint, was named the second best restaurant in Salem.

Marc has since sold the restaurant and is working as a personal chef out of his basement kitchen, taking special orders and catering private parties throughout Salem. His specialties include a variety of special items, many of them directly from his Lebanese heritage: baklava, stuffed grape leaves, hummus, stuffed squashes, roasted lamb, but also makes his own pasta from scratch, as well as quiches, breads, cakes cookies and muffins. He has many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free dishes he has created over the years. He whips up a mean peanut Thai curry, or a scratch lasagna with equal fervor and interest. He has over 50 soup recipes, many are seasonal using the freshest of local ingredients of the season. He maintains a food email list and invites people to share in his creations weekly.

Other interests include music and politics (he is a member of Dr. Atomic’s Medicine Show, a political satire group in Salem), and host of Salem House Concerts, bringing national touring musicians to his home for an intimate dinner/concert series. Soon, Marc will host his own radio show on KMUZ 88.5 Salem with a variety of music and musical guests playing live in the studio whenever he can. His first show was with Melissa Greener of Nashville and soon that recording will be available as a podcast on the KMUZ.org website. Also an avid gardener, he has an extensive herb garden with a dose of veggies and flowers that sets the mood for his annual “backyard bash” garden concert and gourmet buffet dinner, usually in support of a local cause.

Zero Waste Volunteers September 3rd

A HUGE thank you to representatives from Boy Scout Troop 19 and Girl Scout Troop 10231 for volunteering at the Zero Waste Stations on Saturday, Sept. 3! These scouts proudly wore their uniforms and enthusiastically helped marketgoers with their trash. Their volunteer efforts helped us with a very busy Saturday — one in which we filled 4 compost bins and only 3 smaller garbage cans. Thank you scout troops!!!

Boy Scout Julian Zaragoza from Boy Scout Troop 19 helped out on a morning shift.

Girl Scout Maddie O'Donnell worked with volunteer Marilyn Garcia at the busiest station in the middle of the market.
